MATES EVERYWHERE

1948 Philadelphia

Jasper sighed while walking towards a diner in the distance. He stopped before crossing the street and looked around, noticing a lit-up bar sign further down the road.

He shrugged. “Fuck it.” Changing directions. He decided that he might as well have a drink while he waited on the damn idiots. Jasper trudged through the pelting rain till he entered the building. The burning of cigarettes and stench of alcohol hitting him like a wrecking ball.

He smiled before sitting on a stool near the counter. A bartender slowly made his way over but trembled slightly making Jasper sigh in annoyance. It wasn’t the human’s fault but he wanted a fucking drink now so being the impatient bastard he was, Jasper eased some trust and calm in the man’s system and relaxed as the bartender trotted over with a smile on his face.

“Hi! What can I get ya?”

“Whiskey. Straight. Don’t care what kind.”

Within moments he was sipping at his drink, enjoying the burn as it slid down his throat but his shoulders tensed when he felt a presence sit next to him. Peter and Charlotte were the only people who approached him so closely.
From the corner of his eye he saw a small boy in the seat next to him.

"Hi Jasper! You've kept me waiting a long time. Though I thought I would find you at the diner."
A girl?

Jasper's eyes raked over the small vampiress next to him but if it wasn't for the voice he wouldn't have known it was a woman. She had no curves, scrawny and flat like a flimsy piece of drift wood.

He quirked his eyebrow at her curiously. "Apologies?" He offered confused.

"No worries! Oh we are going to be so happy together, you'll see!" She clapped delightedly while bouncing in her seat.

Jasper snorted into his drink. Together? What was this woman? An escapee from a mental hospital?

Peter and Charlotte decided to make their appearance than. Perfect timing as always thought Jasper with a roll of his eyes.

"Heya Major whose the kid? Make a friend while we were gone?" Peter laughed making Charlotte smile but pop him in the back of the head for being a smartass. As usual.

The tiny girl next to him crinkled her nose at his friends making him bite back a growl at the disrespect.
"I didn’t realize you had..... company. I usually see these things." She mumbled

Jasper was going to ask what she meant by that but Peter shook his head subtly with a serious expression while humming. The sound a giveaway that his gift was trying to tell him something and Jasper knew better than to bet against his Captain.

The girl looked back up at Jasper with a huge smile that made him slightly uncomfortable. The only emotion he could feel from her was excitement and it made him twitchy.

"Well are you ready to go Jazzy? We have to meet up with our future family. I can't wait to get started on our new lives!"

Jasper was contemplating ripping her tiny head off her tiny fucking shoulders when Peter suddenly slapped him in the back with a grin.

"Well now little lady you gotta let us say goodbye and fare the well to our coven leader first."

"Fine." She huffed but stood up. "I'll be outside waiting for you Jazzy!" She skipped over kissing him on the cheek before practically dancing out the door.

Jasper tossed back his drink and slammed the glass down on the counter before spinning on Peter with a growl. "I'm not going with that fucking midget fairy."

"What's going on Peter? Why would Jasper need to leave us?" Charlotte practically whimpered. They were all a family. Or as close to one as vampires could get.

"Sorry Major but you gotta go with her. Don't believe anything she says though. It's all lies, just play your part as happy boyfriend or whatever the bitch thinks you're supposed to be."

"Why? I know your gift told you something Peter."

"That's another thing, don't ever let her know about my gift. It's imperative, and you know how my gift works. It only tells me little bits but never the whole until it's time."

"Well what DID it tell you?"

"That it'll be a long hard journey but that girl is going to lead you to something or someone very important whose going to need your help. You'll know it when you see it but you gotta protect... her? I think it's a girl. She's.... family? I'm not sure. All I know is if you're not there she will die and in the end so will all of us."

Jasper flinched. This life had made him endure more loss than anyone should be capable of and losing his two best friends would be the last straw before he completely gave up and tossed himself in a fire. He would never let anything happen to them.

Jasper nodded his head and hugged them both.

Charlotte sobbed but she too knew better than to ignore her mate’s gift.

Peter squeezed Jasper tightly in a manly hug. "We will be in touch I promise." Than Peter slipped something in Jasper's pocket as he pulled away. "I do know that midget outside is a seer. Her visions are based off decisions though so she's trying to put something into motion. Theres something special in your pocket that can block her from seeing you as long as you have it with you. Only use it when absolutely necessary though or she will get suspicious. I always have your back brother."

"I know Captain. I trust you."

Peter smiled knowing that’s the highest praise one could ask for when it came to the Major because he never trusted anyone. Hell none of them did since their time with Maria.

Peter and Charlotte walked him out the door to see the strange girl leaning against a car. She brightened up the moment Jasper came into view and they had to stop themselves from growling. All three plastering fake smiles on their faces.

Jasper walked over to her and put his hand on her hip. "Well let's go sweetheart. Lead the way." He winked making her swoon and then jumped into the car with a cocky smirk.

The moment the Major disappeared down the road, Peter and Charlotte bust out laughing.

Charlotte giggled. "He should be an actor."

Peter smirked. "He's going to be there for the next few decades."

Charlotte sighed. "That long...."

Peter hugged his mate. "Yea but we will sneak visits in I promise."

They held hands as they took off back home to their ranch in Texas to wait out the years until it was time for them to join the Major again.

CHAPTER 2

March 20th 2006

Bella ran through the fountain and across the courtyard as fast as she could. Her eyes spotting the opening of the chapel doors and the outline of Edward's body. She didn't know if she could go any faster but she pushed with every ounce of strength she possessed, colliding with Edward's marble like frame before he could take a single step into the light.

"Edward move! I'm alive!" She yelled at his face with a groan. Her body aching from the collision. Surely she would have bruises since she’d thrown herself against him hard enough to make even him stumble back a step.

The sudden pressure and warmth from her body reaching his own making him snap out of his suicidal trance immediately.

He wrapped his arms around her and sped inside the cathedral and further into the shadows. His nose dipped into her hair as he took a strong sniff of her scent. Venom poured into his mouth like a geyser but he swallowed it all quickly, still though he couldn't contain the small growl that formed into his throat that made Bella go rigid in his arms.

"My love you know I would never hurt you."

Bella pulled away from him slowly. "I don't."

"Smart human." A large vampire chuckled coming from a dark hallway behind the chapel's altar. A shorter but still tall lithe vampire with perfect posture beside him.

The other vampire chuckled when Edward growled louder at them. "She is wise indeed and I don't understand why you growl at us as though we are the threat to her. Neither of us are as effected by her scent as you clearly are bunny muncher." They both laughed

A female vampire with blonde hair that was shorter than Alice appeared suddenly giggling childlike. The sound like windchimes. "Yes a consequence of his poor diet no doubt."

All three were lined up with smiles. Their black cloaks flowing down to the ground normally would probably seem intimidating but Bella felt comfortable around them. Not just because their eyes were clearly such a bright red that indicated her scent had no effect on them whatsoever but it was something in their presence that she found calming. She smiled timidly at them not yet sure if they were actually friendly.

The shorter of the two males bowed regally at her, "I am Demetri. The giant next to me is Felix and the blonde is Jane. Am I to assume you are Isabella?"

This time her smile was real and genuine, happy to have names for the faces. "Yes. It's nice to meet you all. Are you ummm guards?"

Jane lifted an eyebrow in surprise. "Indeed. We must take you before the Kings now."

Bella nodded while taking a step forward only to have Edward grab her roughly and jerk her behind him.
She scowled, "Edward.... The Kings.."

He huffed in annoyance. "Don't need to see you. I will go if I must but you can go and enjoy the festival."

Demetri growled, "The Kings will want to see her as well. This is not a request. You will obey."

"She has nothing to do with them!"

Bella rolled her eyes, "Yea cuz there’s no laws about humans knowing." she whispered sarcastically.

Felix roared in laughter and Jane's lip twitched upwards.

While Edward was distracted and focused on growling at those two, Demetri sped behind him grabbing Bella gently and speeding back to place her safely behind the three guards. Her jacket had ridden up on her arm slightly revealing a bruise that had begun to form where Edward had jerked her only moments ago. The sight made Demetri growl loud enough to quiet everyone else. The tracker wrapped his hands gently around her wrist letting the cold from his skin sooth the heat from the bruise.

After his growl everyone looked his way and while still clutching Bella softly, Demetri's hard eyes glared at Edward. "I'm surprised Carlisle let's abuse of women slide so easily in his coven."

Edward glanced at where Demetri was touching Bella and noticed the bruise between his fingers. "It was an accident." He said but the remorse sounded faked even to Bella's ears.

She looked at the tracker who was still glaring daggers at her ex. "Can we go now? I'd like to walk with you if that's okay."

Demetri's eyes focused back on her. "Of course. May I carry you? It's a long walk."

"Yes that would be wonderful. Thank you."

Edward stepped forward. "Bella I can carry you."

Bella wrapped her arms around Demetri's neck as he lifted her carefully. Her eyes falling on Edward. "Wouldn't want anymore 'accidents'." She sneered making him visibly flinch and look down like a scolded child.

The whole way to the throne room Bella was carried by Demetri with Jane and Felix right behind them to separate her from Edward who trailed behind.

Bella was placed on her feet before the largest double doors she had ever seen. Doors that were obviously made where only a vampire could open them. They were solid stone with the Volturi crest etched into it. The large V lined with gold. It was eerily pretty she thought.

Demetri pushed opened the doors and waved her inside first. There were a few steps to go down before you reached the floor, it was as she was walking down these steps that she heard a cheery voice ring out through the room. A genuine happy and velvety voice that she found soothing unlike Alice's whose always sounded a little forced and high pitched like nails on a chalk board, it annoyed Bella most days.

"Ah! Isabella lives. This is glorious news. Welcome my dear." A man with long straight hair as black as night and dawned in an Armani suit with gold cuff links and a Volturi crest dangling from his neck that was far fancier and more expensive than the ones around the guards. The man practically glided right up to Bella with a soft smile on his face.

She liked him immediately.

"Hello." She blushed shyly

"Do you know what my gift is?"

"You can see every memory and thought a person has had by touching them."

"That’s correct. Do you know who I am?"

"Aro. One of the Kings."

Bella looked behind him noticing a blonde-haired man sitting in a throne glaring at Edward. "And that's Caius." The blonde king's eyes darting to her and offering a slight nod. "And Marcus is not here." Her eyes falling on the third throne that sat empty.

Aro sighed. “Yes, our brother hardly makes an appearance since his mate’s passing. Only if it’s a necessity.” Aro held out his hand. “May I try my gift on you?”

Bella didn’t hesitate to slip her hand in Aro’s. The raven-haired King’s eyes slid closed for a few seconds before popping open and a large smile spread on his face.

“I see nothing. You have a very powerful gift my dear.”

“I do? There’s not something wrong with my head?”

The vampires in the room chuckled.

“Not at all. You simply have a mental shield. A rare gift that has manifested while you are still human. Which is also rare but not unheard of.”

“What does a mental shield do?”

“It blocks the mind from mental attacks and manipulations. Any gift that would effect someone through their mind would not work on you. Mine for example to read your mind and Edwards of course. One day when you’re turned you may even be able to stretch your gift to protect the ones you cherish.”

Bella beamed. “That’s great!”

Aro chuckled. “Yes. You do still wish to be turned?”

“Yes. It’s what I’ve wanted since meeting the Cullen’s.”

Edward who had thankfully been quiet the entire time so far suddenly started growling loudly and attempted to run forward and grab Bella but right before his hand could wrap around her, Jane unleashed her gift on him and Edward fell to his knees screaming.

The sound making Bella jump and swirl around so fast she lost her footing falling backwards where Aro caught her and helped her stand up and regain her balance.

Aro waved to Jane and the small guard member pulled her gift back. Edward sat on the ground gasping for air he didn’t need.

Aro smiled at Jane. “Thank you Jane. I’m surprised you were so quick to protect Isabella.”

Jane shrugged. “Didn’t want her getting any more bruises from this idiot.”

Caius stood abruptly from his throne slamming his hands down on the long rectangle stone table that sat before all three thrones. “Bruise?!”

Edward rubbed the lingering ache from his head. “It was an accident!”

“Yes and how remorseful you look considering you were probably about to do it again.” Demetri seethed.

Aro tutted. “Unacceptable. I will be notifying Carlisle of this.” He turned to look down at Bella. “I couldn’t perhaps convince you to stay and join us hmm?”

“Absolutely not! Bella you don’t want to join these monsters!” Edward shouted

Bella gasped. “That was rude. Don’t speak about them like that!” She looked at Aro softly. “Sorry about him.” Aro just shrugged. She had a feeling he was probably used to it. “Thank you for the offer. Perhaps I’ll think about it especially if Edward isn’t willing to turn me.” She glared at her ex who looked at her shocked before she glanced back to Aro. “But I came to save him from this selfish suicide attempt so Carlisle wouldn’t suffer his loss.”

Aro bowed his head slightly. A gesture of respect. “I understand. The offer will remain of course.”

Caius appeared next to Aro; the blonde’s hand out stretched towards Bella with a card between his fingers. “The Volturi number. I’m sure with all the illegal information you seem to have…” He glared at Edward. “You know you have to be changed or die.” Bella nodded. “Should he fail to grant your request to change before the end of the year, call. We will change you. Plus we would like to be informed from now on of the human who knows our secret and as much as I normally despise humans. I like you a hell of a lot better than that fool.”

Bella snickered and took the card from his hand, slipping it into her bra causing the Kings to look at her curiously.
She shrugged. “He won’t even attempt to reach in there to get it. Wouldn’t know how to anyways.” She snorted

“BELLA!” Edward screeched as everyone in the throne room laughed loudly.

When it quieted Jane offered to lead them to the secret entrance that led out to the street.

They stopped before a perfectly normal door and Jane opened it than looked at Bella. “Good luck. Hope to hear from you.” She smirked

Bella smiled and followed Edward outside. The sun had already begun to lower and it was dark enough not to cause unwanted attention.

They both spotted Alice’s bright yellow Ferrari down the street and walked towards it.

Edward still had a scowl on his face obviously upset by everything that happened and Bella kept her mouth shut not wanting to start an argument at the moment.

Edward slipped into the passenger seat and Bella in the back.

When she closed her door, Alice looked in the rearview mirror with surprise that Bella didn’t understand.

“Bella! You’re alive… That’s great!”

“You didn’t expect me to be?” Bella narrowed her eyes at her once best friend with suspicion.

“Of course! But the Volturi can be… finicky. So I wasn’t positive.”

“Uh huh.” Bella didn’t believe her. “Let’s just go home. Carlisle is probably waiting.”

“Yes of course!” Alice chirped. “I’m sure he will want to talk about all of this.”

“Including Aro offering the Volturi to change Bella…” Edward complained.

Alice’s eyes grew wide and a very obviously strained smile spread on her face. “Oh!” She started the car and drove down the road quickly. “That won’t happen Edward don’t worry. Bella wouldn’t want to join them anyways.”

“She told them she would consider it.”

Alice narrowed her eyes at Bella through the mirror. “You don’t want that Bella. Trust me.”

Except Bella, didn’t. She didn’t trust Alice.

CHAPTER 3

March 21st 2006 Forks, Washington
Everyone was waiting for them when the plane landed. As soon as Edward took a step onto the tarmac, Carlisle and Esme swarmed him. Happy to have their son back. Bella smiled when she saw Jasper roll his eyes at the display. Emmett and Rosalie's expressions weren't much better.

Alice skipped down the steps of the plane but instead of going to Jasper her mate she hugged the 'parentals' with a bright smile. "Told you he would be just fine."

"Yea thanks to Bella saving his dramatic ass." Rosalie snorted.

Esme gasped. "Rose! None of this would have happened if you hadn't told him about Alice's vision of Bella cliff jumping."

Emmett huffed upset. "How was she to know he would go do something as selfish as try and commit suicide? Not only that but going to the Volturi to do it because he was too much of a coward to do it himself. Going to Italy was dramatic."

Jasper smirked. "He's got a point."

Alice scolded Jasper. "He was heartbroken!"

Bella laughed but the sound was harsh. "He had no right to be." Bella noticed Esme about to say something but wasn't about to let it happen. "NONE!" She glared. "He left. His choice. My opinion didn't matter a fucking inch to him or you. He pulls this crap again I'm not rescuing him a second time."

She stormed pass the shocked Coven leader and his mate. Even Alice's icy glare. Ignoring them she went and hugged her three favorite Cullen's.

Rose, Emmett and Jasper were all glad to see she was doing okay.

Emmett picked her up in a giant hug swinging Bella around in his typical Emmett show of affection. "Glad to see those Italians didn't take a bite out of our Bells!" He laughed.

"They offered." Edward growled. "And she didn't exactly turn them down!"

Jasper chuckled. "Really?" He glanced at Bella and went to hug her next.

"Don't Jasper. You know your control is the weakest." Alice spoke.

Jasper kept eye contact with Alice the entire time he reached out and pulled Bella into a hug. Bella snuggled into his chest for a couple minutes before pulling away.

“Good to see you Jasper.” Bella smiled

“You to lil darlin.”

Carlisle cleared his throat, “Maybe we should all meet at the house to talk.”

Jasper, Rose, Emmett and Bella all sighed. “Fine.” They rode together in Emmett’s jeep back to the Cullen’s house.

When everyone arrived they gathered around the living room.

Carlisle smiled at Bella “Thank you for going after Edward and bringing him home safely Bella. I know it was probably a terrifying experience.”

Bella shrugged. “Not really. Italy was beautiful and the Volturi were nice.”

Carlisle seemed surprised. “Bella the Volturi don’t share our diet.”

“Yea I know obviously.” She snorted

“It could have been very dangerous.”

“None of them reacted even the slightest to my scent.”

“Well it’s lucky you didn’t bleed.”

“I felt perfectly safe with Aro and everyone else.”

“Aro’s…. eccentric and not completely sane at times Bella. You should be more wary of strangers.”

“I thought Aro was your ‘friend’? That’s what you’ve always said.”

“Well yes he is…”

Bella cut him off “Ever heard the phrase, with friends like you who needs enemies?” She glared at him. “You don’t talk about your so called friends that way behind their backs.”

Carlisle’s mouth opened and closed several times before he just settled on nodding his understanding. “Yes. Well thank you for Edward.”

“Sure.” Was all she said before getting up and turning towards Jasper. “Will you take me home?”

“Of course Darlin.”

The left immediately not wanting to hear the others complain about Jasper’s control again.

In the truck on the way to Bella’s house, she reached into her pocket and pulled out the small golden locket that Jasper had leant her for luck and handed it back to him.

“Thanks for that Jasper. I’m not sure if it’s imaginary luck is what made that trip so smooth though.”

“Can you keep a secret?”

“Of course.”

“Whoever has this locket on them disappears from Alice’s visions while they have it.”

Bella’s eyes grew wide. “How did you get something like that?”

“My friend Peter I told you about gave it to me a long time ago.”

“How does it work?”

“A lock of werewolf fur’s inside.”

“Is this why they never stop us from hanging out because she can’t see it?”

“Yep.” He chuckled.

Bella rode silently the rest of the way but when Jasper pulled into her drive way and park, she turned to him her mind still running on this new info. “Alice was surprised.”

Jasper was confused. “Surprised about what?”

“That I made it out of the Volturi alive. When she saw me she was surprised I was still alive but….”

“But what Bella?” Jasper asked seriously

“She didn’t look exactly happy about that.” Bella looked into his eyes sadly as if hoping he would tell her she was just imagining it but he didn’t.

His face was as dark as her own. His hands curled into fists.

They both jumped startled when Jasper’s phone began to ring out loudly playing the Star Wars theme song.

Bella tilted her head curiously as Jasper winked at her and flipped his phone open while placing it on speaker so she could hear.

“Heya Major!”

“Peter.” Jasper smirked

“The little lady is right. Alice wasn’t too pleased the Volturi didn’t kill her. Marcus is usually the voice of reason but with him gone when Bella got there the little midget bitch was hoping Caius’s hate of humans would come in and demand her death but it didn’t play out like that. Did it sweet pea?”

“What the fuck? How does he know?”

Jasper chuckled. “Another secret. Can you keep it? It’s extremely important Bella and the only thing we have over Alice.”

“Yea of course Jasper.”

When all the Cullen’s left under Carlisle’s orders as coven leader because of Edward’s request to abandon Bella, Jasper had only pretended to leave to visit his old friends. Instead he stayed behind and grew close to Bella. The only reason Alice had seen her jump from the cliff was because Jasper had been out hunting when she decided to try it.

“Peter has a gift. Peter explain it to her.”

“Well sweet pea. Think of it like the ultimate intuition. Just basically feelings that tell me what to do or when to do it and so on and unlike Alice’s gift where it’s based off decisions, my gift is always accurate. It gives me hints to lead to the best possible outcome of a situation. It’s also why I only get small bits of info at a time. The future is always changing so my gift only gives me the bits of info that will always make things better in the end no matter what someone else does to prevent it. I know you were going to live through meeting the Volturi. I know Alice is up to something and her intentions aren’t good but I don’t know why. You need to look out for yourself Bella. My gift is also telling me it would be a good idea to use that number Caius gave you and give the Volturi a heads up on you wanting to be changed soon and that you don’t feel particularly safe because of the seer bitch.”

“Alright. I trust you Peter. I know how much you mean to Jasper and if he trusts you than so do I.”

“Thanks sweet pea. Also… I’m sorry. I know you are going to suffer in this journey but I don’t know why or how to stop it. At least not yet. All I can say is don’t ever give up or stop fighting sweetheart because we will never give up making sure you get your happy ending. Have faith in us.”

Bella’s eyes water slightly. “I promise. I’ll never give up.”

“That’s our girl.” Peter whispered before hanging up.

Bella sniffled and looked up at Jasper. “You trust his gift?”

Jasper smiled sadly at her. “Yea darlin I do. It’s true that it can’t prevent everything bad from happening but it’s always accurate and in the end it will always prevail with the best possibility. You know about my past with Maria. As an empath I’m powerful darlin but not invincible. If it wasn’t for Peter’s gift I would have died a long time ago. No matter what Bella, I will always do my best to protect you.”

Bella sobbed a little knowing that what Peter said about having to suffer first was probably true than but she felt confident that they would always have her back. She pulled the card out of her bra and dialed the number.

Caius’s voice spoke. “Caius.”

“It’s Bella. Is Aro there with you to?”

Bella couldn’t hear it but Jasper did. There was some shuffling before Aro’s voice rang out through the speaker as well.
“I’m here my dear. Is something the matter?”

“I…” Bella sniffled.

Jasper decided to speak for her. “It’s the Major. Bella does indeed want to be changed and soon but we think there may be some problems from Alice and possibly the others. Alice is up to something and we don’t think Bella’s change fits into whatever her plans are.”

Caius growled. “The bitch can get over it.”

Aro sighed. “What about Carlisle? Has he said anything? What about the bruise on Bella from Edward?”

Jasper looked at Bella with his teeth clenched.

Bella sighed. “Carlisle never said anything about it. To be honest he doesn’t sound like much of a friend to you Aro. You deserve better.”

“So do you my dear.” Aro’s voice was sad. “I want you to check in with us every week Isabella. That way if something happens and we don’t hear from you we will know to take action. If anything happens to make you feel as though you are in real danger you can come here immediately and we will change you.”

“Perhaps you should look into plans to fake your death now so we can move to your protection quicker.” Caius said.

“I will. Thank you both and I’ll stay in touch until we have a way to stage my death.”

After the phone call Bella hugged Jasper sobbing.

If it wasn’t for Jasper these last few months Bella would have given up on everything. She had felt so alone. Renee hadn’t spoken to her since she moved in with Charlie and the relationship she had hoped to grow with him never happened. Charlie was gone most of the time either at work or staying with his girlfriend in Port Angeles until he had just decided it was easier to move in with her. Leaving Bella in the house all alone. Bella was about to give up on her last year of school to work so she wouldn’t be homeless when Jasper showed up and paid for everything up until her graduation.

He had been her friend, brother and almost like a father to her more so than Charlie or Carlisle had ever been. Knowing his past and how much he had overcome had only made her respect for him grow. The fact that he was still so kind hearted and caring regardless of the bitch that sired him and the tortures he endured only impressed her with his strength. She would be strong for him. Like Peter told her. Bella would never give up.

“I love you Jasper.”

“I love you to darlin.”
